Keynote - Day Two
Inviting the Wisdom of Death into Life
Frank Ostaseski -Founder & Director, Metta Institute
Those of us working in hospice/palliative care know that we cannot be truly alive without maintaining an awareness of death.
Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment. She is the secret teacher hiding in plain sight. She helps us to discover what matters most. And the good news is we don’t have to wait until the end of our lives to realize the wisdom that death has to offer.
Yet medicine at its core is generally focused on pathologies, addressing symptoms and curing disease. Dying is much more than a medical event. It’s more about relationships and being fully human.
In this talk, Frank will offer mindful and compassionate approaches that address the particular practical, emotional, psychological and universal needs inherent in the time of dying. He will introduce his The Five Invitations, mutually supportive principles, that are both reliable guides for being with dying, and wise companions on the road to living fully and forging a life of integrity, meaning and purpose that is free of regret.
Frank Ostaseski is a pioneer in end of life care. In 1987, he co-founded the Zen Hospice Project, the first Buddhist hospice in America. He guided that groundbreaking work for almost 20 years establishing a longstanding model for mindful and compassionate care. In 2005, he founded the Metta Institute training countless healthcare clinicians and caregivers and building a national network of educators, advocates and guides for those facing life-threatening illness.
