How
can I find a hospice near me?
The Hospice & Palliative Care Federation of Massachusetts (H&PCFM) contains a contains a complete and current listing of hospices within the state, as well as a national listing in the event you are seeking help for a loved one living elsewhere in the country. You may call H&PCFM at (800) 962-2973 or (781) 255-7077 or
go to our Hospice Locator.
Are
all hospices the same?
All
licensed hospices provide the same basic core services; in
addition, some have byservices programs or services that meet the needs
of particular patients and families. Hospices may be freestanding, community-based
organizations, or they may be affiliated with hospitals, home health
agencies or health care systems. Both non-profit and for-profit hospices
are required to provide the same core services.
Are
there standards for hospice providers?
The majority of hospices nationwide are certified by Medicare, and all hospices in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts must be licensed by the state. In addition, all Massachusetts hospices currently belong to the Hospice & Palliative Care Federation of Massachusetts, a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance and promote excellence in end of life care. Many hospices also maintain membership in the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization, which encourages a sharing of ideas and solutions at the national level. Recently, many hospices have become accredited by national accreditation organizations to further ensure quality care.
What
if I have a problem with my hospice?
As
stated in the Hospice
Patient's Bill of Rights, you have the right to contact a complaint
with any hospice provider. If your complaint is not resolved directly
by your hospice team, or if you feel uncomfortable discussing it with
them, you should contact the administrator of your hospice. In the rare
event that your complaint remains unresolved, you may contact the Hospice
and Palliative Care Federation of Massachusetts at (800) 962-2973 or the Department of Public
Health's Patient Protection Line at (800) 462-5540.
